In July of this year I started the process of searching for & buying my first home. Knowing this was going to be the biggest investment I have made in my life, I spent a lot of time researching different areas within my budget. I would obviously need to find a home that I loved, but instead of just looking at what was available on the market, I decided to choose an area I wanted to live in, even if it meant having to wait for the right house to come on the market. Given that I am single, I was also looking for a home that would appeal to the widest range of homebuyers & offer me the greatest upside on my return on investment.
Although I don’t have any children, I know that living in an area with good schools is a major factor for the majority homebuyers, so I loved the fact that 15 of the 17 public schools in Flower Mound are rated at a 9 out of 10 or above on Great Schools. Both of the high schools are terrific, Flower Mound High School is newer & has a better STEM program, while Marcus High School has one of the best band programs in the state.
My second concern was the effect that taxes would have on where I chose to live. Since Texas doesn’t have a state income tax, we pay a higher property tax rate than most states and they can vary between 2-3% across DFW. After working with my lender, I was surprised to see that even a .25% change in my tax rate made a noticeable difference on my monthly payment. After researching tax rates of cities with the best schools I was surprised to find that Flower Mound has the lowest tax rate of the cities I was interested in, meaning I could afford the most in Flower Mound.

A large part of my job includes driving all over DFW & this can mean that I may need to be in Plano for the morning and in Fort Worth later in the afternoon. Flower Mound’s central location between Dallas & Fort Worth offers the ability to get anywhere in DFW in a reasonable amount of time. Another huge benefit is that Flower Mound is closely located to the DFW airport. It’s great to know that I can go from my house to the airport in an easy 15-20 minutes.
I enjoy spending as much time as possible outside (typically with my chocolate lab) and love the fact that Flower Mound is situated between Lake Grapevine and Lake Lewisville. Along Lake Grapevine there are a number of parks offering some of the best trails for mountain biking & hiking in DFW. One of my favorite things to do is spending time at the lake, whether that be boating or camping lakeside, so I was excited to find out that a number of the parks along Lake Grapevine offer campsites and even furnished cabins for rent.
Having lived in Flower Mound for a while now, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to purchase here. I absolutely love my home and the area I am in and honestly didn’t think I could have found such a perfect fit. All of these factors & experiences led to the answer of the question of why I live in Flower Mound, TX.
